WebbSOLVED: I had an empty file /etc/initrd-release which for some reason prevented booting and created a boot loop. Removing this file allowed the system to boot after the upgrade. After successfully upgrading and rebooting, I touch ed the file /etc/initrd-release and the system would not boot again (proving that this file is the issue).
