I thought hard in 3 was way easier than hard mode in 2. extreme in mgs3 is about as difficult as hard in mgs2 imo. mgs3 hard mode felt pretty close to mgs2 normal. But you should start out on normal for max replayability imo :P I kinda regretted playing on hard mode the first time for that reason.
