WebDefinition and Function. A passive radiator is a type of loudspeaker with no active driver or voice coil but rather a diaphragm that vibrates in response to changes in air pressure. Passive radiators work in conjunction with active drivers to produce sound. The active driver, usually a woofer, has sound by moving a diaphragm in and out. Passive radiators are used instead of a reflex port for several reasons. In small-volume enclosures tuned to low frequencies, the length of the required port becomes very large. They are also used to reduce or eliminate the objectionable noises of port turbulence and compressive flow caused by high-velocity airflow in small ports. In addition, ports have pipe resonances that can produce undesirable effects on the frequency response. To a first-order approximation, the passive radiat…
WebA passive radiator is an efficient way of getting more power and deeper frequencies out of a compact speaker system. Passive radiators also eliminate the chances of port tube noises, called chuffing, associated with bassreflex port tubes. Furthermore, passive radiators recreate sound to exit the cabinet similarly to a bassreflex port tube, but ... Websmall compact design whose high frequency output extends smoothly up to and beyond 20kHz. This driver is suitable for portable consumer and automotive applications. WebWhat the passive radiator does, basically, is create a larger port area, without the airflow noises that might otherwise occur, and help control the frequency range over which the port is effective. More swings and roundabouts, really, but it definitely falls into the vented box camp, and doesn't have any of the positive time-domain benefits of ...
